General information on long-term (type D) visa / residence permit applications
Georgian citizens who hold a biometric passport can enter the European Union, and therefore Hungary, visa-free (without a visa) for up to 90 days (within 180 days). Stays longer than 90 days require a residence permit.
Application for a long-term (type D) visa - residence permit (90+ DAYS)
For type D (residence permit) applications, the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (Országos Idegenrendészeti Főigazgatóság – OIF) is the decision-making authority. The Consulate is responsible only for forwarding the applications.

Please download and fill in all required documents before coming to submit the application. When submitting the application, documents specified on the websites must be submitted in original. If the application is incomplete, the applicant will be informed about the missing documents and until providing these documents, his/her application will not be sent to the Hungarian immigration authorities for evaluation and decision.

With a view to the limited availability of timeslots, please keep in mind your timeline as well as the length of the final issuance of the visa, and make sure to reserve an appointment accordingly.

IMPORTANT! Applicants who are granted Stipendium Hungaricum state scholarships are exempted from paying the application fee.
When lodging the application, you are expected to:
- Present an application form duly filled and signed. Application form and the necessary appendix can be downloaded from the website of the Hungarian immigration authority: National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing at https://oif.gov.hu/forms?locale=en.
- In case a minor (under 18) would travel alone, he or she shall submit an application form signed by both parents exercising permanent or temporary parental authority or legal guardianship. The minor shall also present a declaration of permission by both parents (exercising permanent or temporary parental authority or legal guardianship). In case the minor is travelling only with one of his/her parents, the other parent’s permission is needed. The declaration of permission has to be original and certified by public notary.
- Present a valid passport, which shall be valid at least for three months. Please check out before applying whether your passport contains at least two blank pages and it has to be issued within the previous 10 years.
- Present a valid reisdence permit (in case of a third country national).
- Present 2 biometric photos taken in the last 3 months, facing the objective directly, visible in the face, ears and forehead and the backlight must be white, size 35 mm x 45 mm.
- Pay the residence permit application fee (except for applicants who are granted Stipendium Hungaricum state scholarships, whose application is free of charge).

How long does the residence permit procedure takes?
- in case of study purpose: 15-21 days
- in case of employment purpose: 45 days, in specific cases up to 60 or 70 days
- in case of family reunion or gainful activity: 21-45 days
! Please note that we are unable to provide updates on ongoing visa cases during the procession time.
! Once there is a decision, our Consulate will contact you via the e-mail address you provided on the application form. If your application was approved, we will inform you about the earliest possible date for collection.
APPEAL
In case of refusal, applicants can appeal against the negative decision within 8 (eight) calendar days from the date of receiving the decision on refusal.
Appeal submissions are by appointment only. Appointments shall be made via the online reservation system: ONLINE BOOKING SYSTEM.
The fee for the appeal is 160 EUR, to be paid at the time of submission, at the Consulate, via card.
Required documents for appealing:
- Appeal statement: Written in the official language of the European Union, practically in English or Hungarian.
- New additional supporting documents: Documents to support the application that have not been previously submitted.
Appeal applications must be submitted to the related authority that rejected the submitted application.
The decision of an appeal application is given by the competent Hungarian authority (the deadline can be prolonged in specific cases especially if more documents are needed).
The person whose application is rejected can always make a new application. The person who wants to make a new application must pay the visa fee for the new application.
