Application for long-term (type D) visa for the Purpose of Study

Georgian citizens who hold a biometric passport can enter the European Union, and therefore Hungary, visa-free (without a visa) for up to 90 days (within 180 days). 

Consequently, Georgian students with a biometric passport can either: 

    1. submit an application for a residence permit upon arrival in Hungary (at the National Directorate-General for Aliens-policing or electronically via EnterHungary) OR
    2. they can submit their application for a type-D visa (residence permit) at the Embassy of Hungary in Tbilisi.

Please note that these two procedures cannot be combined!

When can you apply as a student? 

If admitted to / accepted by a public or higher education institution for pursuing full-time course of study or attending a course in a higher education institution, which may cover a preparatory course prior to such education.

If you still wish to apply in Tbilisi

Via our Consulate, applications can be submitted only after booking an appointment at the following website: https://konzinfoidopont.mfa.gov.hu/home 

Application forms must be downloaded from the website of National Directorate-General of Aliens Policing of Hungary (https://oif.gov.hu/forms?locale=en): Annex 9: “Application form for a residence permit” and Appendix 13 (Pursuing studies or student mobility).

Expectations and list of documents to be enclosed:

  • valid travel document,
  • certificate of admission or student status of Hungarian educational institution,
  • proof of linguistic knowledge required for the pursuit of studies (for example: a language certificate in proof of language proficiency examination, or an official diploma in proof of studies in a foreign language),
  • evidence that fees charged by the education institution have been paid (for example: bank transfer statement),
  • proof of means of subsistence in Hungary
    1. scholarship grant;
    2. a certificate from a credit institution under the applicant’s name (e.g.: a bank account statement, an account statement on savings or stocks and bonds, bank balance statement),
    3. bank statement of last 6 month including cash-flow;
    4. if financed by a family member, family relationship is to be verified by: certified and English translated birth certificate(s) indicating relationship; and sponsorship statement of family member certified by notary; and family member’s proof of financial means to cover subsistence;
    5. if financed by a non-family member (person or company): sponsorship agreement and person’s or company’s proof of financial means to cover subsistence;
  • proof of place of accommodation in Hungary (an existing and real Hungarian address shall be declared as accommodation on the application form, for example: certificate of placement in dormitory, or lease agreement and property registry deed of accomodation),
  • comprehensive healthcare insurance,
  • ticket for departure,
  • Valid residence permit (in case of third country nationals)

IMPORTANT! Minor (under the age of 18) applicants should also provide a statement of consent of both of his/her parent or legal representative giving permission for his/her stay in Hungary, for the duration of the planned stay (Hungarian or English translated). 

Present 2 facial photographs taken in the last 3 months, facing the objective directly, visible in the face, ears and forehead and the backlight must be white, size 35 mm x 45 mm (one of the pictures must be sticked on the application form, the other handed over to the consular officer).

Applicants who are granted Stipendium Hungaricum state scholarships are exempted from paying the application fee.

IMPORTANT! To ensure a smooth process, please arrive at your consular appointment with all the necessary documentation for your visa application (including a valid travel document, the visa application form that is properly completed, signed, and accompanied by 2 facial photographs, along with the corresponding appendix, and the required supporting documents). Please note that we are unable to forward applications that are incomplete or have been filled out incompletely.

How long does the residence permit procedure takes?

In case of study purpose, the decision can take up to 21 days

! Please note that we are unable to provide updates on ongoing visa cases during the procession time. 

! Once there is a decision, our Consulate will contact you via the e-mail address you provided on the application form. If your application was approved, we will inform you about the earliest possible date for collection.  

APPEAL

In case of refusal, applicants can appeal against the negative decision within 8 (eight) calendar days from the date of receiving the decision on refusal. 

Appeal submissions are by appointment only. Appointments shall be made via the online reservation system: ONLINE BOOKING SYSTEM

The fee for the appeal is 160 EUR, to be paid at the time of submission, at the Consulate, via card.

Required documents for appealing:

  • Appeal statement: Written in the official language of the European Union, practically in English or Hungarian.
  • New additional supporting documents: Documents to support the application that have not been previously submitted.

Appeal applications must be submitted to the related authority that rejected the submitted application.

The decision of an appeal application is given by the competent Hungarian authority (the deadline can be prolonged in specific cases especially if more documents are needed).

The person whose application is rejected can always make a new application. The person who wants to make a new application must pay the visa fee for the new application.
